Here you can find the most important facts in a short text.

Recklinghausen is part of North Rhine-Westphalia, one of the 16 Federal States of Germany. North Rhine-Westphalia is half the size of the Republic of Ireland, yet it has 18 million inhabitants and contributes almost a quarter of Germany’s economic output.
The capital city is Düsseldorf (75 km from Recklinghausen), and the largest city is Cologne (100 km from Recklinghausen).
Both cities have international airports.

Recklinghausen itself has 120,000 residents and is the largest city in the most populated district in Germany.

For centuries Recklinghausen has been the judicial and administrative seat of the region, often dubbed The Vest. Unlike many other German cities in the adjacent Ruhr area, Recklinghausen was largely unscathed in WWII.

The city is famous for its annual Ruhr Festival which takes place in May/June. It is one of the biggest and best known theatre festivals in Europe.

Recklinghausen also houses the New Philharmonic Orchestra Westphalia, the biggest of its kind in North Rhine-Westphalia. The Recklinghausen campus of the Gelsenkirchen University of Applied Sciences has a student population of 1,500.
